NEPAL WOMEN'S BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT. Amidst its natural beauty
and tourist destinations, one would not think of Nepal as place of
extreme poverty. However, the UN includes Nepal on its well-known list
of "50 Least Developed Nations."1 More than 50% of the population is
getting by on less than $1 per day. To address the problem, our Nepal
team is expanding a women's skill & business development program in impoverished
areas in the Himalayas. The program offers training workshops to train
women in skills of basket weaving, bag-making, and candle making. Due to
very low rates of electricity coverage in the remote towns and villages
of Nepal, candle making is very profitable. Our program is offering
graduates candle making molds and enough supplies to get their
home-based businesses off the ground, all at a cost of only $29 per
participant. During the program, women are offered the opportunity to
join in Bible studies conducted in between sessions. Through this, many
women are coming to a knowledge of the good news of Jesus Christ for the
very first time in their lives.
