UGANDA

For the past several years our native team in Uganda has been reaching out to the destitute population of the Mayuge District, third poorest of Uganda's 74 districts, where 50% of the population is under the age of 15. The district was the site of the infamous sleeping sickness epidemic in the 1950s, during which the government declared the area a no-man's land and drove out the entire population. Since the 1970s the community has been slowly rebuilding from scratch and as a result seems behind the curve in what is already a very underdeveloped nation. Operating a 6-acre farmland enterprise, we've equipped our team with a piggery and other resources to empower and multiply their efforts. Our efforts are currently focused on reaching out to orphans, destitute women and children, and those who lack access to clean water.

ORPHAN CARE. Among the most severely affected of the community are the tens of thousands of orphans left behind by the HIV/AIDS crisis and devastating civil wars. Thus a main focal point in our outreach is to the children of the local community. We operate an orphan care program which serves sometimes hundreds of children daily, several of whom live on the campus and attend our school. Our on-campus medical clinic, Rapha Medical Center, attends to scores of illnesses daily in which orphans are given priority access. Through the efforts of our program, these amazing children are offered both physical and spiritual strength, as our staff shares the Biblical principals of God's love and care for them through frequent Vacation Bible School day-camps.

EDUCATING THE DESTITUTE. Determined to offer an affordable, quality education for the local population, our team operates two private schools with a current enrollment of over 300 children. On our main campus, a new school building has just been completed in an effort to improve the quality of education and increase our ability to bring in more students. As the government in many cases has merely offered primitive arrangements such as chalkboards attached to tree trunks where the children gather in the shade of the tree, our team is making a profound impact in the community.

WOMEN'S CRAFT BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT. The women of the local community where we serve have been gifted with very resilient, hard-working and determined spirits. However they lack two important ingredients in putting these gifts into action: capital and training. Seizing on the potential we see in these amazing women, we're equipping them with training and basic supplies to start small craft businesses. They're making beautifully crafted, in-demand products such as wicker baskets, sleeping mats and brooms. A gift of just $79 can commission one of these women into a profitable business, empowering her with the ability to supplement her family's income. More importantly, by assisting in the launch of her new business, we give her the gift of self-confidence and fulfillment in utilizing her talent and ability.

CLEAN WATER INITIATIVE. Water-borne diseases such as dysentery, cholera and bilharzia have been very common in the local community where our team operates. Witnessing first-hand the countless cases coming in to our medical clinic on a daily basis has motivated us to make the availability of clean water an urgent priority, and prompted us to install a water well for public access on our campus. Our easily accessible clean water well is proving life-saving and transformative to the way the local community functions on a daily basis. Our well provides clean drinking water for 12,000 locals daily. From sunrise to sunset a long line of water-seekers can be seen with their distinct yellow jerry-cans, awaiting their turn for access to the life-giving clean water.
